Creator — Books

Outline, edit, cover, interior, EPUB, print files, publishing. The author writes the book; you are the one who gets it finished.

Watch this first

Before the email, watch the pitch for this role. It is the same thing we would say on the call: what the work is, who it suits, and what happens after you apply.

What a normal week holds, who the role suits, what it does not suit, and what the test actually measures.

Video coming shortly. The pitch for this role goes here: what the work looks like, who it suits, and how the test works.

02

What you'll actually be doing

You work with authors who have a manuscript and not much else: a pile of chapters, a good idea, and no clear way through to a finished book. You take it from there. Structure first, then the draft work with the author, then the edit, then everything that turns a document into a book somebody can buy.

  • Read the whole manuscript and give an honest structural read: what the book is, what it is missing, what has to go.
  • Build the outline and the chapter plan, then work with the author to fill the gaps without writing the book for them.
  • Edit in two passes: developmental notes first, then line edits that keep the author's voice instead of replacing it.
  • Get the cover made or make it, and hold the interior layout so the pages are readable rather than merely filled.
  • Prepare the files: the EPUB that does not fall apart on a phone, and the print file that passes the printer's check.
  • Set up and check the publishing listings — title, description, categories, keywords, and the sample pages that sell it.
  • Hold the schedule with the author and the cover designer, and say early when something is going to slip.

Who this is for

Someone who reads, who can hold an author's voice while improving their book, and who can hold a deadline with somebody else's work in their hands. You are comfortable telling an author that chapter four does not work.

Who this is not for

Someone who wants to write their own book rather than helping someone finish theirs. Your name is not going on the cover: the book belongs to the author.

How to apply

One email, one role, and something you have actually made or done. That is the whole application. Nobody is reading for keywords.

What to send

  • One book you took from manuscript to published, and exactly what you did on it.
  • A page of line edits you have made, before and after.
  • A note on one book you love, and one you think is badly made.
  • One link to something you have actually made or done in this kind of work.
  • Your name and where you are based, so we know which hours you keep.

What not to send

  • No generic cover letter. If you want to write something, write it about this role.
  • No CV longer than one page. One page, or a link.
  • No list of tools you have used without saying what you built with them.
  • No second application. Applying to more than one role reads as applying to none.
  1. You email us. One email to jobs@doubleup.ai with the role name in the subject line. Applications open by email for now, and that address is the whole entry point.
  2. You get the test. Within two working days we send the practical test for the role you picked, with the brief and the tools you will need.
  3. You do the test. You take the time it asks for and send it back. The test is the whole interview: there is no panel and no second stage after it.
  4. You hear back. Roughly a week from the day you send the test in. Everyone who does the test hears back either way, yes or no.
Apply for this role by email

Applications open by email for now. The button opens a message to jobs@doubleup.ai with Creator — Books already in the subject line — send it as it is, or write over the top of it.

06

The application test

The test is the whole interview: there is no second stage and no panel. You get a real unpublished manuscript and you do the first pass on it.

What you are given

A real manuscript

Twenty thousand words of an unfinished book, with the author's own outline notes attached.

How long it takes

Three days

An edit plan, a chapter restructure, and ten pages of line edits.

What is measured

Judgement on the page

Whether you can see what the book is trying to be, and whether your edits keep the author's voice intact.

Test content — coming shortly

The Books test goes here.

The manuscript sample, the author's notes, and the edit plan we would want returned. The test content is being written and will be published on this page.
